Mumbai:
The struggle to become an Indian cricketer is a dream shared by millions, which was captured in films like Iqbal. But now, Gurudas Shenoy, the son of a vada paav vendor from the suburb of Dombivali near Mumbai has been picked to train at the ICC's Global Cricket Academy in Dubai.
Nicknamed Dombivali Fast, the 22-year-old has been picked from among 5,000 aspirants to train at the academy under the famous Australian coach Rodney Marsh.
"I used to play with a tennis ball until a few years ago, and just recently started playing with season ball. I got to know about the Gatorade Pacers Talent Hunt. I had a round in Mumbai, then a few of us were short listed to go to Delhi. There too I had to bowl. Manoj Prabhakar came there and I got selected with three other boys," says an elated Gurudas.
Gurudas is an engineering student who used to help at his father's vada paav stall in his spare time. It was tough to find the time for cricket, but Gurudas says his father always encouraged him. "My father has always encouraged me. He's never said not to go. He has collected money and sent me to engineering college. He never says no."
"I could not study and didn't get opportunities. But I want my child to get all of that," says his father S Shenoy.
Gurudas has been nicknamed Dombivali Fast after the suburban train he travels on. And with one dream fulfilled, he has his hopes set on a fast-track entry into the Indian cricket team.
