Burdwan: Body of an old man, discharged from hospital on April 13, was found lying in the compound of state-run Burdwan Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal's Burdwan district today.
The hospital superintendent Asit Baran Samanta said the man, identified as Amir Ali Sheikh, was discharged from the general ward on April 13, two days after being admitted, and if he had developed any symptoms later it was for his relatives or police - in the absence of kins - to get him admitted to the facilities again.
Relatives of patients and locals said Sheikh, who had been living in the compound despite his release about a month back, was diagnosed with cancer and requested proper treatment.
However, the hospital said he was released only after recovery from the general ward and there was no report of his needing further treatment at the time of discharge.
As Sheikh's body was seen lying before Radharani Building this morning, a crowd gathered. It was later taken for post-mortem after doctors declared him dead.
SP S M H Mirza confirmed the death and said everybody - police, doctors and patient's family - would have to come forward to serve the elderly poor and helpless.
Two months back, the body of a patient was found in the drains near the hospital compound.
