Kochi:
A Kerala court has awarded death sentence to a 36-year-old man for killing his wife in a 'gruesome and inhuman' manner in November last year.
Holding that the murder committed by the accused, Unni, comes in the category of 'rarest of rare cases', Ernakulam Sessions Court Judge B Kamal Pasha awarded death sentence to him yesterday under section 302 of the IPC.
Unni was also sentenced to rigorous life imprisonment for seriously injuring his wife's mother. The court also directed him to pay a fine of Rs 5 lakh to the family of his wife.
According to the prosecution, Unni had first attacked his wife's parents before stabbing his wife Usha to death on November 1 last year following a quarrel in the family.
Usha had pleaded to Unni to spare her life as he went on an attacking spree, the prosecution said.
Usha's parents had come to Unni's residence to take their daughter and her six-month-old child to their house as the accused used to constantly beat her up.
The prosecution produced 16 witnesses in the case.
