Mumbai:
A final call on hike in fares by Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) will be taken on Tuesday.
"Decision on the hike in bus tickets, monthly and quarterly passes will be taken tomorrow when the matter comes up for discussion," BEST Chairman Sanjay Potnis said.
The transport body has proposed to raise its bus fares by Rs 2, following which the minimum basic fare would be Rs 5. A hike of Rs 40 and Rs 110 for monthly and quarterly bus pass respectively has also been proposed.
Currently, the monthly bus pass is available at Rs 160, whereas the quarterly pass costs Rs 440.
"BEST cannot afford further losses which are to the tune of Rs 300 crore. The hike is unavoidable but it is not necessary that only the proposed fares will be BEST considered," Potnis said.
In wake of increase in prices of compressed natural gas (CNG), auto and taxi fares were hiked last month from Rs 9 to Rs 11 and from Rs 14 to Rs 16 respectively.
