Delhi: 1,200 deaths in road accident so far

New Delhi: Around 1,200 people have been killed and 3,300 injured in road accidents in the national Capital this year so far while over 2,600 were arrested for their involvement in such mishaps, the Lok Sabha was informed on Tuesday.

According to government statistics, a total of 1,199 were killed in as many as 3,481 road accidents this year till July 31. The number of injured were 3,335.

Police also arrested 2,604 people so far this year for their involvement in accidents.

This was disclosed by Minister of State for Home Affairs Mullappally Ramachandran in a written reply.

"Expansion of road network has not kept pace with the phenomenal vehicular growth witnessed by the city. Besides, overspeeding, rash and negligent driving, drunken driving, disregard for traffic rules, poor road geometrics, poor lighting and lack of pedestrian facilities are some of the reasons for accidents in Delhi," Ramachandran said.

According to the statistics, there were 7,516 accidents last year in which 2,325 people were killed and 6,936 injured which was less than the figures for 2007 and 2008.

In 2008, the number of accidents were 8,435 as against 2007's 8,620. While 2,141 were killed and 7,711 in 2007, the figures were 2,093 and 7,343 respectively for 2008.

The number of people arrested in connection with accidents were 6,979, 5,820 and 5,084 for 2007, 2008 and 2009 respectively.
