New Delhi:
The national capital on Friday experienced the lowest maximum temperature in the last five
years causing biting cold even as dense fog disrupted air and train services.
Though the minimum temperature rose slightly to settle at 8 degrees Celsius, the maximum was 12.1 degrees, the lowest in the last five years, the Met office said.
A thick blanket of fog enveloped the city in the morning and almost throughout the day the maximum visibility was only 600 metres while the minimum was less than 100 metres.
Fog started to descend on the IGI airport in New Delhi from late last night, leading to drop in runway visibility, which was as low as 50 metres this morning, they said.
But the situation improved slightly as the day progressed and the runway visibility at 10 AM was 100 metres, a Met official said.
The Met office had predicted that there will be thick fog in the morning and shallow fog later in the day.
They said minimum temperature on Saturday is likely to hover around 7 degrees, while the maximum will be recorded at 18 degrees Celsius.
