New Delhi:
To promote green power generation, the Delhi Jal Board has commissioned the first-ever hydropower plant in East Delhi's Chilla area, which will produce 20,000 kWh of electricity per year.
"This is the first plant in Delhi which will be run through hydraulic turbines propelled by treated effluent coming out of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP).
"The treated effluent here falls through the height of 4.8m, which due to the pressure and velocity leads to rotation of turbine, generating power," Jal Board said in a statement today.
The generated electricity will be utilised at the treatment plant that will produce 20,000 kWh of electricity per year.
"It is a pilot project which has been set up free of cost. We are also exploring the possibility of replication of this 'Green Power Generation' at other installations as well," the statement said.
"The use of fossil fuels leads to generation of carbon dioxide, which in turn leads to Green House Effect and Global Warming. However, no fossil fuel is being used in generation of power through Hydro-power at Chilla. Therefore, this technology is termed as pollution-free technology," it added.
