New Delhi:
Dreams of a new life were shattered at the last minute for a young woman in New Delhi as the groom called off the marriage when her family could not meet the demand for a car just hours ahead of the ceremony.
But her brother's resolve landed the groom's 52-year-old mother in the police net for allegedly demanding an 'Alto' car and refusing to go ahead with the planned marriage.
The incident took place at Nizampur in Kanjhawla area of Outer Delhi two days ago and the arrested woman has been identified as Kamla, the mother of an MTNL peon Ajay whose marriage was fixed for May 23, police said on Tuesday.
Devender, the brother of the bride, had gone to Ajay's house hours before the marriage after he received a call from them, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chhaya Sharma said. The girl's family resides in south Delhi's Mahipalpur.
His statement was recorded in which he claimed that his sister's marriage was fixed with Ajay for May 23. The engagement was done a day before and her family had handed over various article to Ajay's family, Devender claimed.
The articles included bed, TV, fridge, sofa, washing machine, gold chain weighing 15 gms for Ajay, five gram gold ear rings for Ajay's mother, 15 gram gold chain for sister-in-law, sewing machine, watch, 71 utensils, 40 pairs of shirts and trousers and desert cooler among other things.
On May 23, Sharma said, the girl's family made arrangements for the marriage and reception at a community hall in Vasant Vihar for around 1,200 people, police said.
"However, at around 4 pm, Devender received a call from Kamla and was asked to reach their house. Kamla, her two sons Amit and Parveen, her daughter and uncle were present and they demanded a car as dowry. They told him that the marriage will be solemnised only if the demand of car would be fulfilled," Sharma said.
Devender told them that they cannot fulfill the demand as they were not in a financial position to buy a car.
"Kamla then refused to go ahead with the marriage. Ajay also did not pay heed to their requests and remained unavailable for the girl's family. Devender has spent Rs 4.5 lakh for the arrangements of reception," Sharma said.
It was then Devender made a call to police, who reached the spot and after recording his statement arrested Kamla under Dowry Prohibition Act.
Kamla is a housewife having three sons and a daughter. Her husband, who was serving in MTNL as junior engineer, has expired and Ajay got the job on compassionate ground.
