Munna Bhai could not earn an MBBS degree for himself but for several medical students of the Lady Hardinge Medical College (LHMC), he is no less than a hero in their war against irregular water supply on campus.
Inspired by the Gandhigiri as displayed in one of the Munna bhai movies, hundreds of doctors at the LHMC have started sending "Paani Do" (Give us water) SMSes every morning to the junior engineer (water) of the area.
The college is situated on Sikandra Road and the doctors and staff allege that the water supply had been very erratic for the last six months.
As repeated complaints to the authority concerned fell on deaf ears, the doctors have now taken refuge in 'Gandhigiri'.
"We have been sending the messages to the JE on regular basis," confirmed Dr Amit Sinha, a third year post graduate student, Lady Hardinge Medical College.
College officials told MiD DAY that the water is supplied for only two hours in the morning and that too on low pressure.
"The students have also reported the matter to the director and other higher officials but no action has been taken," said a senior college official, requesting anonymity.
There are approximately 150 students staying in the college hostel.
"The duration of water supply is very less. In the morning, it comes from 7.30 to 9.15. Even in the night, it depends on the consumption," said another third year student, who wished to remain anonymous.
Students also allege that there are no proper arrangements for clean drinking water in the hostel. They claim that no purifier has been installed in the canteen and they have to drink tap water that exposes them to the danger of contracting water-borne diseases.
"Sometimes we have to go outside the college to drink water," Amit said.
Lalit Kumar, junior engineer, admitted receiving the SMSes.
"Yes, I do receive such messages and I respond to them too. But what can I do, if there is low supply," he said.
However, the director of the college refused to comment on the issue. "I cannot comment on this. It will be better if you speak to CPWD," said Dr GK Sharma, director, LHMC.
No CPWD official was available for comment.
