Delhi: NGO demands pension for sex workers

New Delhi: Have you ever thought about the source of livelihood of sex workers when they grow old? An NGO in Delhi has raised this question.

Sex workers in the city above 50 years of age should be given old age pension by the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), the NGO representing them demanded on Wednesday.

Earlier in March, the MCD had given its nod to a proposal to include eunuchs in its pension scheme for the elderly, the physically challenged and the widows.

The demand was raised by president of Bhartiya Patita Uddhar Sabha Khairati Lal Bhola when he met Delhi Mayor Prithvi Raj Sawhney.

"A large number of sex workers are on the verge of starvation as they have no means of livelihood. It is our request that sex workers who are above 50 years of age be kindly sanctioned old age pension as per rules. This will help them survive," he said.

The MCD had on March 15 cleared a proposal wherein eunuchs will be given Rs 1,000 every month. A municipal councillor, Malti Verma, had floated the proposal in February.
