New Delhi:
Delhi came face-to-face on Wednesday with the three young men who killed a young man, his wife, and her cousin. The Delhi police released the photographs of the suspected murderers -- two of them are cousins, the third was a close friend. Together, they set about to punish the women in their family for daring to marry men of their choice.
On Monday morning, the Capital confronted the reality that there is no urban-rural divide when it comes to honour killings. In upwardly-mobile Ashok Vihar, Kuldeep was found shot dead near his apartment. His wife, Monica, had been killed at their home. On Tuesday, Monica's cousin, Shobha, was discovered in a black Santro not far away - the smell of her rotting flesh alarmed a parking lot attendant.
Monica had defied her family by marrying a man from a different caste. Shobha had helped her elope. Both their brothers had not been seen after Monica and Kuldeep were killed.
The Delhi police confirm now that Shobha, Monica and Kuldeep were all shot on Sunday night.
Monica and Shobha belonged to a village named Wazirpur in North West Delhi. Here, where their parents still live, their deaths cause no regret - the popular opinion is that the girls had crossed carefully-drawn lines- corrective action had to follow.
"We are educated people... this is the right thing to do, society will go for a toss otherwise... they were from the same village," says Nitin, who lives next door to Monica's parents, and her brother, the now-underground Mandeep.
His father says Mandeep has made him proud. "I think the youth have done a good job. Let society get the message. I support it completely."
It's this unrelenting conviction that has the police worried for another cousin of Monica's -Khushboo. She eloped recently to marry the man she loves. She may well be the next target, admit policemen handling the case.
