Kota: A day after learning that she had cleared the IIT entrance exam, a 17-year-old girl jumped off a fifth floor home in Rajasthan's Kota.
The police say the teen was "disappointed" with her result.
She had scored 144, which is above the cut-off of 100 required to qualify for IITs, but the suicide note recovered from her room said that she was not happy, the police said.
"In her suicide note she mentioned that she did not want to pursue engineering. It is probably due to pressure from her parents that she was preparing for engineering entrance exam," Superintendent of Police Sawai Singh Godara told NDTV.
The IIT JEE or Joint Entrance Exam mains results were announced on Wednesday.
The girl, a resident of Ghaziabad near Delhi, had been taking coaching for the IIT entrance exam and was living with her parents in Kota. The police say the girl's father had tried to console her but she jumped off the balcony the moment he stepped out.
Since January, this is the fifth case of suicide by a student aiming for the IIT in Kota, a popular centre for engineering and medical college aspirants to take coaching classes.
A worried district administration had started a helpline for students with the help of coaching institutes but the disturbing trend continues, say officials.
Last year, there were 18 student suicides in Kota.
