The DMK expelled a local leader from the party after he was seen in a video kicking a woman repeatedly in disturbing CCTV footage from a beauty salon in Tamil Nadu's Perambalur district. The accused, Selvakumar, has been arrested.
The incident reportedly took place on May 25. Selvakumar is seen kicking the woman even as three others try to stop him. The woman is heard screaming in pain in the video.
According to the police, the woman had taken a loan of Rs 5 lakh from Selvakumar, who was demanding she return it.
Initially, the DMK suspended Selvakumar from primary membership accusing him of "bringing disrepute to the party". Later, party chief MK Stalin said Selvakumar had been removed from the primary membership of the party. Announcing the expulsion on social media, Mr Stalin warned of stern action against party members who indulged in such "anarchy".
Selvakumar has also been charged by the police with assault, hurting and harassment.
