Mumbai doctor Vishal Vanne, accused of raping a 30-year-old patient at a Vashi hospital, has a girlfriend in America, confirmed a police official.
"His girlfriend is in America and we doubt if she is even aware of the incident, so we are not sure if she would come here to meet him. According to our information, she is pursuing a degree course in Physiotherapy," the official said.
Vanne, a BAMS graduate, was working as Resident Medical Officer (RMO) at Lotus hospital in sector 15, Vashi, since the last one-and-a-half-years.
The hospital management has sacked Vanne after the incident came to light. Vanne's father Baban Vanne is a retired employee of a private firm.
"He has confessed to the crime and we are awaiting forensic reports. His record till now seems clean and further investigations are on. We are also investigating if he had given any sedatives to the victim before the incident to make her semi-conscious," PI Rajkumar Chaphekar said.
The incident happened on Saturday night, after the victim was admitted to the hospital for unconsciousness and giddiness. The victim, along with her husband and relatives, had gone for Durga Puja at Modern College when she started feeling giddy.
The victim's husband took her to the Lotus Hospital where she was initially taken to the general ward wherein she was under the supervision of Vanne.
A little later, when she started shivering, Vanne recommended that she be shifted to the ICU since she was 'serious'. Her husband learnt about the incident only on Sunday morning after he met his wife.
