Hyderabad:
A special drive to arrest the increasing cases of rash driving by teenagers will be launched in Hyderabad from Monday, a senior police officer said.
With fatal accidents and underage driving on the rise, a special drive to control 'Teenaged Rash Driving' will be launched in the city, Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) C V Anand said.
"Lot of youngsters, many of them under the eligible age for driving and many without Driving Licences are seen driving two-wheelers and four-wheelers in the city. Recent serious road accidents due to such rash driving by youngsters have prompted us to take up this drive," he said.
According to the traffic police most of the traffic norms violated by youngsters include signal jumping, over-speeding, rash driving, talking on cell-phone while driving, triple riding and drunken driving.
As part of the special drive, vehicles will be seized and released only after the (teenaged) driver and their parents appear for traffic counselling and pay a challan amount which will not be less than Rs 500.
The drive will also focus on controlling racing at night time and drunken driving by youngsters, where stern measures will be initiated with seizure of vehicles and registration of criminal cases, Anand said.
A total of 518 persons lost their lives in 3,342 road accidents reported in 2008, 481 in 2009 and 365 persons died in 2103 accidents reported till September this year in different parts of the city, according to traffic police.
