Drugs, lies and videotape in Hyderabad

Hyderabad: The Telugu film industry is abuzz - Hyderabad's top cop said at least 65 high profile actors, actresses and sons of politicians could be high on drugs.

This revelation comes after the arrest of a Nigerian drug peddler Chima Clement. Clement was arrested with 2 other budding actors, both brothers of Ravi Teja.

"60 to 65 names have come up, in which people from film industry, high-end society, enterpreneurs, professionals, businessmen, children from wealthy families are there,'' says AK Khan, the Commissioner of Police for Hyderabad.

The police say phone numbers of some top stars figure in Clement's mobile records. Naturally, the film industry is edgy. "Just because our numbers are there with them, accusing us that we are involved is very unfair. We do have our personal lives. First get it confirmed, till then don't release any names," says Nani, a well-known producer.

With too many big names being spoken of in hush hush tones, observers wonder if the police propaganda about the 65 VIPs was giving them an opportunity to clean up their act and  ensure none of them actually fall into the police net.

The police say nine pubs in Hyderabad, where they suspect drugs are peddled, will be under the scanner.
