Drunk driver enters Secretariat, 5 cops suspended

Chennai: Chennai Police have arrested a lorry driver for steering his vehicle into the high-security Secretariat complex in an inebriated condition and suspended five police personnel for failing to stop him in what is seen as a breach of security.

According to police, the lorry was found parked in a restricted area and when policeman on patrol duty asked the driver Ayyappan to move the vehicle, he drove it into the Secretariat complex with nobody to stop him. He was under the influence of alcohol, police added.

The lorry, on its way to the southern suburbs of Chennai, came to a halt after hitting the portico of the Assembly building yesterday, police said adding he was apprehended only after the vehicle stopped.

While Ayyappan was arrested and remanded to custody after being slapped with different sections of IPC including drunk driving, five cops including an Inspector who were on duty at the Secretariat complex have been suspended for failing to stop the lorry from entering the high security zone, police said.
