Vijayawada: An elderly woman died this morning as a stampede broke out at a post office in Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, where several retired people had gathered to get themselves registered for pension.
The pension amount had been hiked from Rs 200 to Rs 1,000 after the election and people over 60 had come to the camp to register themselves again for enhanced pension.
Police say chaos erupted as soon as the post office opened at around 8 am, and the woman was killed in the rush to get in.
There was a large crowd today as many people had been removed from the pension list as they did not fulfil the criteria, and they did not want to lose the benefit.
