Engineering student dies mysteriously, father alleges murder

Jalpaiguri, West Bengal: Mystery shrouds the death of a final-year student of the Jalpaiguri Engineering College whose body was found in his hostel room on Sunday. His father alleged his son was murdered.

"The body of Manojit Roy was found on his bed by hostel staff and it was taken to the local hospital where doctors said that Roy died several hours ago," police said.

Roy's hostel room has a hand-written statement on its walls reading, "I shall not touch alcohol anymore. From tomorrow, I'll devote myself to study alone - Munna" (Roy's pet name), police said.

"The handwriting has to be verified and we are waiting for the post-mortem report," police said.

The student's father Madhusudan Roy, a resident of Bashirhat in North 24-Parganas district, said his son was not an alcoholic.

"Rather, he had been frequently physically and mentally tortured by a section of his classmates for his anti-alcohol stand. It was a case of murder," he alleged

College Principal Jyotirmoy Jhampati also said he did not believe that it was a case of suicide since Roy had recently got a job through campus placement.
