New Delhi:
A 22-year-old vegetable vendor was arrested along with his businessman friend in the Capital
for allegedly murdering a teenage girl four days ahead of her marriage as she rejected his proposal, police said on Thursday.
Amit Kumar (22) and Mahesh Goyal (25) were apprehended last night from Holambi Kalan railway station while trying to flee from the Capital, 12 hours after they allegedly murdered Sonia (18) at her residence in Outer Delhi's Metro Vihar.
The arrest came following the victim's father telling the police that Mahesh and Amit, their neighbours, were threatening them since Holi and that he and his daughter Sonia had rejected the marriage proposal.
Locals and relatives of the suspects were interrogated and it was established that on the fateful day Amit and Mahesh were present in front of the house of the deceased.
A trap was laid and the duo was arrested from the railway station, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Outer) Chaya Sharma said.
During interrogation, she claimed, the duo told them Sonia was stabbed to death by Amit as she had refused to marry him.
"The father of the girl had also opposed the marriage but Amit wanted to marry her desperately. Her marriage was fixed for April 18. Having come to know of their plans, Amit decided to eliminate the girl as he could not afford to see the girl being married off to another person," she said.
Amit works as vegetable vendor while Mahesh runs a CD shop.
