Lucknow: A 15-year-old girl reportedly committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Etawah district after the police refused to lodge an FIR against six men who had allegedly tried to gang-rape her sister over a property dispute they had with the girls' father.
The girls' mother had complained to the cops that six of their neighbours had tried to rape her elder daughter. But despite the complaint, the family alleges, the cops did not register an FIR and forced the father to arrive at a compromise with the accused.
On Friday, the mother and daughter even met the Superintendent of Police and the Deputy Inspector General who assured them that action would be taken. But that very night, the family was harassed and threatened by the accused - something that drove the girl's sister to commit suicide. It's only after her suicide that the police arrested the six men.
Their girl's father has been missing since June 16 but no efforts have been made by the police to trace him.
The district SP has ordered a probe into the role of the Station Officer and other cops posted at the station.
Police protection has also been given to the mother and daughter.
