Salem:
A woman posing as a census officer allegedly assaulted and robbed a 35-year-old woman of gold ornaments and Rs 1 lakh in cash today, police said.
Maheswari was assaulted in Annathapatti area in the district when she went to fetch a glass of water for the woman posing as the census officer, police said.
Meanwhile in nearby Namakkal district, a woman census officer suspected to be a robber was allegedly locked up today in an iron merchant's shop before being rescued by the police, authorities said.
The officer was carrying out the census in the shop in Pallipalayam area in the district when the iron merchant grew suspicious of her questioning and locked her up, police said.
