Fake cops on the prowl, police suspect rogue colleagues

Ahmedabad: Two women were duped of their valuables in Satellite and Maningar each by some men posing as the neighbourhood friendly cop. Such incidents are on the rise in the city and police are surprised by the gullibility of people who get carried away by the fake cops' story.

But they also believe that some suspended cops may be behind such incidents. "We got some clues about involvement of suspended policemen sometimes back in two such cases. But we can't say much about their involvement as of now. The suspicion still prevails," said Brajesh Jha, deputy superintendent of police, zone one.

He further said that another trend observed is that such incidents happen simultaneously in different areas, which point towards one gang operating in several areas. He said that it could be one gang operating in different areas. In the Satellite and Maninagar incidents the victims were robbed by three men.

Jayveer Gadhvi, police inspector of Ellisbridge police station said often it is the attitude and confidence of the thieves that make their victims believe their story. "The victims simply fail to judge the situation because of the confident body language of the thieves," Gadhvi said.
There are certain gangs involved in such activities but if sources are to be believed many suspended cops could also be behind such incidents as nobody can impersonate a cop better than a cop himself, said the source.

Sources said most of such cops gone rogue could be those whose services were terminated or those who were suspended. Inspector Gadhvi also agrees to this fact. He said there are some clues that point towards the involvement of such suspended cops in such incidents but nothing concrete can be said as of now. Gadhvi has formed a special team to nab such gangs and is confident of a breakthrough in such cases.

The modus operandi of the con cops is bizarre and almost funny. The fake cops suddenly appear from nowhere posing as friendly policemen. They usually cook up a story about an accident or such thing and ask their victims, mostly senior citizens, to hand over their valuables for safe keeping till the matter and crowd is cleared. They will then vanish with the valuables.
