Thane:
A fire broke out in an oil factory in a village at Shahpur block in neighbouring Thane district in the wee hours on Tuesday, following which houses in a two km radius were evacuated.
Ten water tankers and five fire engines from fire units of nearby Bhiwandi, Thane, Kalyan, Ulhansnagar, Navi Mumbai cities have been rushed to the four-decade old Liberty Oil Mills in Bamne village where the fire broke out in one of the units at around 0530 am, fire brigade officials said.
The blaze that broke out in a two-storeyed unit spread fast as inflammable products were stored inside the building, emanating huge smoke, said Sanjeev Jadhavar, Shahpur Tahsildar.
Three edible oil tankers exploded and as a precautionary measure, houses in the two kilometre radius have been evacuated, he said.
Nobody was working in the unit when the fire broke out, he said adding no casualties were reported.
Liberty Oil Mills, spread over 27 acres, deals in production of refined vegetable oils, vanaspati and intensified vegetable oils.
