Aligarh:
Five students were injured in a clash between two rival groups at the Aligarh Muslim University, police said.
Violence broke out on Wednesday night when several men, armed with sticks and country-made firearms, allegedly broke into a hostel building on the University campus and went on a rampage following a minor altercation with a rival student group.
For nearly half-an-hour, pandemonium prevailed in the hostel compound as several shots were also fired, police said, adding that five students were injured in the melee.
According to the police, an amount of Rs 3 lakh, which was part of a students' welfare fund meant for a function, was also looted.
A complaint has been lodged at Civil Lines police station against 17 people in connection with the violence.
"The violence appears to be a planned attempt by vested interests and miscreants to disrupt the ongoing examination and admission tests of the University. Stern action will be taken against anyone found guilty," a spokesperson of AMU
