New Delhi: Five members of a family met a tragic end on Thursday as a girl jumped on the railway tracks at Faridabad New Town station and her kin made a desperate rescue bid, but all were run over by the speeding Rajdhani Express.
The incident took place when the six-year-old child jumped on the tracks while playing at the platform at Faridabad New Town railway station. Four members of her family immediately jumped on the tracks to save her without realizing that the Thiruvananthapuram-bound train was approaching, a Northern Railway spokesperson said.
A railway official said no compensation was announced for them as they had not "bought tickets" for the journey which would have established them as bonafide passengers.
Other members of the family who died were the girl's father Kripa Shankar, mother Indu, sister Pooja and grandmother. Only the child's grandfather remained unharmed.
They were waiting at the station to board a train to Haridwar for the Kumbh Mela.
According to the Northern Railway spokesperson, Kripa Shankar was working as an employee in TKW Automative in Manesar. The family was joined by the girl's grandfather and grandmother who had come down from Bihar to accompany them to the Kumbh Mela.
