Flurys' reopens at Stephen Court, Kolkata rejoices

Kolkata: Kolkata's Flurys' is back in business - five weeks after 43 people died in the fire at Stephen Court, where iconic teashop occupies the ground floor. The reopening is a sign that the city is back on its feet after the tragedy.

On Friday, as the shutters at Flurys went up once again, early visitors stopped a moment to remember the victims of the fire last month.

"Flury's means Kolkata, Kolkata means Flury's," said Suparna Dey, a regular. Of the victims, she said: "They are always in our hearts and we pray for their souls. Hope the Kolkata Corporation ensures such things don't happen again."

"It's part of our culture. When the Stephen Court fire happened, Park Street lost some of its old charm. But when Flurys' reopened, it's back again. It's what Kolkata is," reiterated Jyotishko, another patron, as they all rejoiced at the landmark's reopening.

All of 83, Flurys' was able to reopen within six weeks of the fire, because the wing in which it is housed at Stephen Court was untouched by the blaze.

"What happened was absolutely terrible and our thoughts are with the families. We do think about them every day, but we also realise that the show must go on, says Flurys' Indira Basu.

So, the rum balls, almond cubes and meringues are back as Kolkata celebrates its will to prevail over the most testing of tragedies.
