Footballers held on molestation charges

Mumbai: Three members of Goa football club Churchill Brothers were arrested on Tuesday on the charge of outraging the modesting of an airhostess while flying on a SpiceJet plane from Goa to Kolkata.

Of the the trio, two are Nigerians and the other an Indian, Additional Commissioner of Mumbai Police Amitabh Gupta said without giving the identity of the players.

He said the three players have been arrested and FIR filed against them pressing the charges under Section 354 (outraging the modesty of a woman), Section 509 (words, gesture or act intended to insult the modesty of a woman) and Section 34 (common intention to commit a crime).

The entire 23-member team, which was on way to Kolkata in a tournament, were offloaded at Mumbai airport after some players allegedly misbehaved with an airhostess and other cabin crew members.

"Some passengers misbehaved with and abused our crew on board flight SG 804. Our pilot took a decision to offload them in Mumbai during the scheduled transit halt," a SpiceJet spokesperson said in Mumbai.

The private air carrier did not reveal the identity of the offloaded passengers but the Churchill management said they were its team members.

The pilot decided to deplane the team members in the interest of safety of fellow travellers, the spokesperson said.

In Panaji, the Churchill Brothers Team management defended its players and said it was contemplating filing a defamation case against SpiceJet for allegedly harassing its players.
