New Delhi:
Four Delhi Police constables have been arrested for allegedly extorting money from a businessman in the guise of saving him from a case of human trafficking, police said on Thursday.
The incident was reported from south-east Delhi's New Friends Colony and the constables have been identified as Ravinder, Rajbir, Pervez Anand and Bhir Singh, a senior police official said.
On April 20, the Constables had gone to a businessman involved in travel and tour operations telling him that they were investigating a complaint of human trafficking registered against him.
They allegedly told the businessman that they could save him and demanded Rs five lakh for it, the official said adding later a deal was struck between the businessman and policemen for Rs 1.5 lakh and money changed hands.
However, the official said, the businessman came to know that the constables "cheated" him and that there was no case against him at the New Friends Colony police station as claimed by them.
He then approached the police besides giving a separate complaint to Additional Commissioner of Police (South-East) Virender Chahal, who ordered a detailed inquiry into the incident.
Following the inquiry, the four constables posted with NFC police station were suspended on Monday.
They were placed under arrested the next day after a case of extortion was registered against them.
