Further cut in Mumbai's water supply in the offing
Mumbai: Civic authorities are pushing for a further cut in water supply in Mumbai. This was revealed by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner, Swadeen Kshatriya, in his weekly presser on Thursday.

The BMC has proposed a 100 per cent water cut, once in a week, in one area.  The proposed cuts will be effective from January 15. However, final decision on the cut is yet to be taken. Currently the cut stands at 15 per cent.

Political parties, cutting across party lines, in the Municipal Corporation have opposed further cuts of water in Mumbai.

According to BMC authorities urgent steps are required as reservoirs are well below normal levels due to lack of rainfall.

One person had died after the police lathi-charged hundreds of people protesting against water cuts in Mumbai on December 3.  The protests were led by Congress leader Narayan Rane's son, Nitesh Rane; he was arrested along with 23 others, but was later released on bail.

The rally, consisting mainly of Rane's supporters, had blocked the road outside the city's Civic Headquarters, opposite the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. The police had claimed that the crowd was 5000-people strong and was trying to force their way into the Headquarters when the police intervened.
