A girl, who was arrested on charges of theft, on Saturday allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself from a ceiling fan inside a police station here following which a judicial inquiry has been ordered into it.
Seventeen-year-old Sarbjit Kaur was arrested along with her mother Jatinder Kaur for allegedly stealing gold worth Rs one lakh. She and her mother were in police remand for the last two days, ASP Punjab Police Dhanpreet Kaur.
When Sarbjit was alone in a solitary cell at Gate Hakima she committed suicide by hanging herself with her scarf in the wee hours today.
"Stringent action will be initiated against the police staff who were on duty when the girl committed suicide," Dhanpreet said.
It is gross negligence on part of the police, he said, adding a judicial inquiry has already begun in the incident.
