New Delhi:
A 15-year-old girl was electrocuted to death in a government school in the Capital on Friday after she came in contact with an electric wire which was lying in a pool of water.
Priya Mishra, a Class VIII student, was going home from Sarvodaya Senior Secondary School in Dilshad Garden at around 12 noon when the incident took place, Deputy Commissioner of Police (North-East) S S Yadav said.
Some construction work was being carried out by DSIIDC inside the school and an electric wire used for the construction had fallen in the pool of water there.
"She was coming out of her class. There was some water collected inside the school campus. She was crossing it and then got electrocuted as a live electric wire was lying in water. The wire was attached to a grill. This caused the electrocution," a senior police official said.
She was rushed to Guru Tegh Bahadur Hospital where she was declared brought dead.
A case of causing death due to negligence has been registered against the contractor of the construction work, the official said.
Her family blamed the school authorities for the death saying they should have ensured that no such incident take place. Some of the angry relatives and locals barged into the school after the incident and allegedly manhandled the staff, including teachers.
Quoting locals, police claimed that the school authorities did not inform her family about the incident. Some classmates informed the family about the incident.
"There was a minor scuffle because of the emotions involved," the official said.
Meanwhile, Delhi Government suspended the school's vice-principal Anita Rani and an internal inquiry committee was set up to inquire into the incident. The government has also announced a compensation of Rs one lakh for the girl's family.
