Pune:
In a daring theft at a gurudwara in Pune's camp area on Wednesday night, everything was going as per a neatly laid out plan by what looked like a young thief except that all his moves were being captured on CCTV.
The thief entered the Hollywood gurudwara in Pune's camp area from the rear side and went straight into the main hall where the huge donation box was kept.
He first covered one CCTV with a piece of cloth not realizing that all his moves were being captured in the second CCTV which he could not trace.
Covering his face he pulled out the huge donation box and within 20 seconds managed to break open the big lock on it.
He then started emptying the cash, only the bigger currency notes of 100, 500 and 1000, and not bothering to touch the smaller currency. He than packed the notes in a bedsheet which he had brought with him and finding that he could not pack the notes in that he then pulled a table cloth from a nearby donation box and then packed the notes in that too and then coolly walked away.
It was only in the morning when the priests and other devotees entered the hall that they realised that the cash was missing. According to the gurudwara officials, every fortnight they open the donation box and looking at the average donations of nearly 2.5 to 4 lakh every fortnight they feel that the thief must have decamped with over 1.5 lakh rupees, leaving behind over Rs 87,000 which were in smaller currency.
The police conducted a panchnama and suspect that someone who knows the functioning of the gurdwara may have attempted this, they concluded, after doing a proper recce.
