Harassed by police, girl commits suicide

Jaipur: The Rajasthan Assembly on Tuesday witnessed noisy scenes after opposition BJP raised the issue of alleged suicide by a girl whose passport verification documents were rejected by police.

Raising the issue during Zero Hour, BJP deputy leader Ghanshyam Tiwari said 19-year-old Nisha Hiranandani consumed poison when her 'tatkal' passport verification documents were rejected by the officer of the Shiprapath police station on Monday.

He also alleged that the police personnel misbehaved with her forcing her to take the extreme step.

Responding to the issue which led to uproarious scenes, Home Minister Shanti Dhariwal said inspector Veer Singh, against whom an First Information Report(FIR) has been lodged, has been removed and Jaipur Inspector General of Police B L Soni asked to probe the matter.

Later, Soni told reporters that the applicant was not a permanent resident of the Pink City and had come to Jaipur a few months ago, prompting the police to seek further details from her.

Meanwhile, local residents led by the father of the girl held a demonstration outside the police station in protest against the incident.
