Pune:
A 40-year-old woman in Pune allegedly committed suicide by hanging herself after suffering harassment by her in-laws for almost 20 years because she had not borne a male child.
Kanta Adinath Avtade, a resident of Thergaon, was found dead at her home on Wednesday, said the Hinjewadi police, who registered a case of abetment of suicide against her husband Adinath Vishwanath Avtade.
Kanta's brother Baburao Vitthal Gadhve filed the complaint.
The police said Adinath and Kanta were married 20 years ago, and the couple had a seven-year-old daughter. The complaint said Adinath and his family were harassing Kanta but she kept silent about the ill treatment.
"The in-laws were basically harassing her because they wanted a son, but Kanta had delivered a girl child. They also wanted Kanta to bring Rs 20 lakh from her parents as dowry, which she didn't," Baburao said in the complaint.
Fed up of the everyday taunts and other forms of physical and mental harassment, Kanta ended her life.
"A first information report has been lodged against Adinath Avtade and he will be arrested soon," said an official of the Hinjewadi police station. Police sub-inspector R S Kadam is investigating the case.
