Haryana Man Jailed For Life For Raping Mother, Forcing Her To Kill Herself

A court in Haryana's Gurugram sentenced a man to rigorous life imprisonment "till his death" for raping his mother and abetting her suicide.

The court of additional district and sessions judge Rahul Bishnoi also imposed a fine of Rs 20,000 on the convict.

The judge, in his order, said the convict, being the son of the prosecutrix, was supposed to act like an "umbrella of protection for her", but he became her tormentor and "acted like an animal" and committed the gruesome act, leaving the woman with no option but to take her own life.

Taking into consideration the nature of the offences, the manner in which the offences are committed as well as the antecedents and economic condition of the convict, he is sentenced to rigorous imprisonment for life, the court said.

It added that the "convict will remain in jail till death".

According to police, on November 16, 2020, a woman killed herself by hanging in her house in a village in Haryana.

The woman's husband filed a complaint with the police alleging that the woman might have been forced to take the extreme step, they said.

The man told the police that the elder son of the deceased was a drug addict and would often fight with the family members, police said.

The woman was married to her brother-in-law after her husband died around 20 years ago.

A case was registered and investigation taken up, police said, adding the autopsy of the woman's body confirmed that she has been raped.

Subsequently, the woman's son was arrested on November 21, 2020, police said.

The police submitted a charge sheet against the accused and during the course of the hearing of the case presented strong evidence in the court, they said.

As many as 18 witnesses testified in the court and the allegations against the accused were proved right, police said.
