Mumbai:
Two Shoppers Stop employees in Mumbai were held for robbing jewellery worth Rs 61 lakh from the Popley and Sons jewellers counter in the showroom at Inorbit Mall, Malad.
The main accused, who robbed the booty, has been identified as Anwar Iqbal Kasim Shaikh (28). A resident of Nalasopara, he had been a supervisor at the perfume counter for the past three years.
According to the police, last Thursday at 8 30 pm, the salesman at the counter, Ejaz Ahmed Shaikh (20) removed the displayed jewellery, locked them in the counter and handed the keys to the security guard, as per protocol.
The following day at 10 am, a saleswoman noticed irregularities and informed the owner Rajiv Popley, who found 350 tolas of jewellery missing. He then lodged a complaint with the Bangur Nagar police.
Explaining the investigation, Ramrao Pawar, additional commissioner of police (North Region), said, "The robbery was done systematically. The robber even kept the keys exactly where he took them from. This led us to believe that the robber was an insider."
Suspecting Anwar and Ejaz, the police detained both. "Ejaz was supposed to give the duplicate keys to the owner but didn't and instead kept them in a drawer without a lock. That was open invitation to the robber," said Pawar.
On checking CCTV recordings of the day of robbery, police found that Anwar had neither exited the showroom on Thursday nor entered it on Friday. However, he was on duty on Friday, confirming that he was in the showroom on the night of the theft.
With that lead, police arrested Anwar, who eventually confessed to the crime. He told police that the booty was hidden inside the perfume counter. The police searched the counter and found the booty along with a few electronic cameras and mobile phones.
Anwar was arrested last Friday on the charge of theft and presented before the court which remanded him to police custody till today.
Anwar hid inside the 10/12 ft counter for more than 12 hours with the booty. He would have succeeded in sneaking out too, had the CCTV recordings not given him in.
"He had been planning the robbery for a month now," said PI Nalawade of Bangur Nagar police station.
Last Thursday, Anwar carefully hid beneath the perfume counter till the mall was shut. He then used the duplicate keys to open the counter and removed the loot. He hid the booty in a drawer before hiding himself.
He then informed his father that he would be out for the night and also told his boss that he would be coming in late on Friday.
