Heavy rain lashes city

Pune: The extended monsoon continued with the city receiving as much as 18.6 mm rainfall till 5.30 pm on Monday.

The heavy rain, accompanied by thunder and lightning, came down in torrents between 3.30 pm and 5 pm in some parts of the city. Monday's rainfall has taken October's aggregate rainfall figure to 238 mm.

Speaking to DNA on Monday afternoon, director for weather forecasting at the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Medha Khole, said Monday's rainfall was the result of a localised, low pressure area (LPA) formed over Madhya Maharashtra and Marathwada.
According to her, Puneites could expect more rain in the next 48 hours.

"However, the intensity of rainfall would reduce after two days and should peter out by October 23," she said.

Khole said the Konkan coast could receive heavy to very heavy rainfall in isolated areas, while Marathawada and Madhya Maharashtra (which includes Pune district) could expect heavy rainfall in isolated pockets.

She said eastern and peninsular India had received rainfall due to the deep depression that had formed in the Bay of Bengal last week.

Likewise, northern India is expected to receive rainfall in the next two days due to a western disturbance.
