Officials at the MRA Marg police station in Mumbai registered an FIR against unidentified staff members of St George's Hospital for stealing jewelery worth Rs 1.2 lakh from a 52-year-old accident victim, who was admitted to the hospital on Sunday.

Hemanji Waingankar suffered severe injuries when she was hit by a BEST bus while crossing a road near the Fort area. She was rushed to the hospital in critical condition by her son, Sagar, and was subsequently declared dead.

"She was taken inside the ward and we were asked to wait outside. Around 30 minutes later, the doctors asked my father and uncle to remove the jewelery my mother was wearing on her nose and toes. This is when they discovered that other ornaments worth Rs 1.2 lakh were missing," said Sagar.

"The doctors pleaded ignorance. We were left with little option but to approach the MRA Marg police to help us find the missing jewelery. However, they swung into action only yesterday, after DCP Vishwas Nagre Patil intervened and asked them to register a case", said Hiraman Waingankar, Hemanji's husband.

"We have registered a case and the matter is being investigated. We will solve the case as early as possible," said Sanjiv Kokil, senior police inspector, MRA Marg police station.

A senior doctor from the hospital said, "Names of seven doctors, two ward boys and one RMO (Resident Medical Officer) have been handed over to the police for further investigations as they were on shift duty that day."
