Huge Late-Night Storm Hits Delhi And Suburbs; Trees Uprooted

New Delhi : A huge storm accompanied by rain in some regions hit Delhi and nearby areas early Wednesday morning, uprooting trees and disrupting power supply. There have been no reports of casualties so far.

This is the second such storm to hit the national capital in the past four days. Over 50 people were killed in the last storm that had hit north India three days back, including two in Delhi. 

The weather office had earlier estimated the wind speeds could touch around 74 km per hour. In a warning issued earlier, it had forecast loud peals of thunder with frequent lightning flashes, moderate to heavy spell of rain.

Meanwhile, power distribution company in the national capital, BSES, said that teams have been put on high-alert and are trying to restore disruptions in affected areas. "The restoration may take longer than usual as safety is of paramount importance," it said.

On Sunday, violent dust storm, followed by rain and lightning had toppled walls and uprooted trees throughout the national capital. Two people were killed in Delhi and 18 were injured in the storm, while one death was reported from Ghaziabad. Over 40 flights had been diverted from Delhi airport as well.
