Husband of woman charged with baby's murder blames doctors

Mumbai: Deepika Parmar, who threw her 45-day-old girl child out of the bathroom window at KEM Hospital on Tuesday morning, could not see her babies suffer. Stating this, Manish, her husband, blamed the doctors for directly informing his wife about the condition of the twins.

"Doctors should not have informed her about their condition. After losing two children earlier, she was unable to cope with the fact that the chances of her twins' survival are less," said Manish. The twins were premature babies and were given continuous oxygen supply at the hospital.

"Doctors told her that even if the girl survived, she would continue to have breathing problems. Deepika was very upset about it," said Manish.

Manish said he was sure that she would not have taken this step. "If she wanted to kill the girl child, she would not have waited for one and a half months. Although we are poor, we have managed to treat both the children. We have never differentiated between a girl and a boy," added Manish.

The family is now worried about how they will manage the increasing hospital bills and the police case against Deepika. Deepika has been booked under section 302 (murder) of the IPC. She, however, has not been arrested on humanitarian grounds.

"I am in debt. Because of the hospital rounds, I have not been able to work. We are saving on food to pay the hospital bills," said Manish. "There is no one to help us. My wife is not a criminal. Circumstances and insanity led her commit this mistake. It will be great if someone comes forward to help us out."

The Parmar family is resting all its hopes on the hospital's psychiatric department to prove that Deepika was not mentally stable. Psychiatrists, however, said that it is too early to comment on her mental health and why she killed her baby girl and not the boy.
