Husband 'plotted' home robbery to repay loan

Pune: The Sahakarnagar police stumbled upon the bizarre fact while probing the robbery case at Suman Vihar Apartment.

Suresh's wife Rajeshwari was alone at home when two men, posing as gas cylinder deliverymen, entered the house and threatened her, tied her limbs, gagged her and decamped with gold ornaments and a cellphone, together valued at more than Rs 2 lakh.

Some residents had noticed the registration number of the two-wheeler used by the suspects.

The crime branch sleuths and Sahakarnagar police managed to arrest the duo, Sachin Kashinath Uttekar (31) of Ambegaon Budruk and Kiran Krishna Naik (23) of Dhankavdi.

They also arrested Suresh, who works in a private printing press.

Police inspector Suresh Kekane of crime branch (Unit II) got a tip-off of the registration number of the motorcycle that led to the arrests of Uttekar and Naik.

During interrogation, the duo revealed that Suresh planned the robbery at his own house.

Senior police inspector Bajirao Bhosale of Sahakarnagar police station said Suresh had to repay a loan of Rs2.5 lakh, which he had taken for his marriage.

"He had requested his wife to sell some ornaments, which she refused. Since he desperately needed money, he engaged Uttekar and Naik to commit the crime," police officials said.

Once the mission was successful, Suresh had promised to pay Rs 10,000 to the duo. But he refused to pay them, saying they manhandled his wife.

Bhosale said the suspects claimed to have stolen ornaments of about 50 grams. "But we recovered 20 gm of ornaments from them," he added.
