Pune: The Sahakarnagar police stumbled upon the bizarre fact while probing the robbery case at Suman Vihar Apartment.
Suresh's wife Rajeshwari was alone at home when two men, posing as gas cylinder deliverymen, entered the house and threatened her, tied her limbs, gagged her and decamped with gold ornaments and a cellphone, together valued at more than Rs 2 lakh.
Some residents had noticed the registration number of the two-wheeler used by the suspects.
They also arrested Suresh, who works in a private printing press.
During interrogation, the duo revealed that Suresh planned the robbery at his own house.
"He had requested his wife to sell some ornaments, which she refused. Since he desperately needed money, he engaged Uttekar and Naik to commit the crime," police officials said.
Bhosale said the suspects claimed to have stolen ornaments of about 50 grams. "But we recovered 20 gm of ornaments from them," he added.
