Immunisation programme fails to take off in state

Jaipur: The success of the health department's immunisation programme is suffering due official indolence and lack of interest.

The state department has been able to achieve only 39.54% of its target in the first six months of the financial year 2010-11. Of the annual target of immunising 16.45 lakh children, the state health department has been able to bring only 6.5 lakh under their programme.

In comparison to last year, the department is lagging behind by 7.46%. In 2009-10 more than 7 lakh children were already immunised by the month of September. Also the state could utilise only `1.78 crore of its budget of `40.93 crore allotted under National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) this year.

Interestingly the laggards in the programme implementation are districts like Jaipur, Jodhpur, Bikaner, Hanumangarh, Sriganganagar and Kota.

Tailing at the end of the list, Jodhpur district registered 22% less success as compared to the last year.

"Yes, there was problem of implementation in the immunisation programme in Jodhpur and other districts. Now we would be conducting catch-up drives in the next three months to attain the target," Dr ML Jain, director, Reproductive and Child Health (RCH) said.

Leading the chart in the implementation of the health department's immunisation programme are districts like Sirohi, Jhalawar, Jalore, Barmer and Banswara. These districts have almost completed half of their targets for the fiscal year.

Only four districts Barmer, Banswara, Alwar and Tonk have performed better then last year while all other district struggling to achieve their targets have been able to achieve only 1% to 25%.

"We have called a high-level meeting on Thursday on the micro-planning on the issue of immunisation. We would now involve anganwari workers, ASHA sahyoginis in the work,"Jain said. He added, these workers will go from door-to-door in the rural areas to conducted immunisation. jain is hopeful that the department can improve its performance in the next half of the fiscal year.
