Asserting that the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system in the capital has been "doing well", Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit said on Wednesday that the next such corridor will come up in East Delhi in which design changes will be incorporated keeping in view the "lessons learnt".
Addressing a symposium here on 'Public Transportation in Indian Cities' with special focus on BRT, she said when the new-age transport system was introduced in Delhi, there was a "hue and cry" and the government was grappling with the problem of how to convince people that it will help ease congestion in the longer term.
"I can say with a measure of satisfaction that BRT has achieved to a very large extent what we set out do. It is doing well," she said adding, 10,000 more people are travelling by buses since the BRT was introduced.
Later, Dikshit said the next BRT will be from Shashtri Park to Karwal Nagar in East Delhi. "But the design cannot be the same as (already-running) Amedkar Nagar corridor. There will be changes in the design according to convenience and the need to coordinate different types of vehicles on roads. We have learnt a lot of lessons after the first BRT and we will not repeat the design aspects which caused problems," she said.
On implementing the Moolchand-Delhi Gate stretch of BRT, Dikshit said the bus stands are already there and signages will be on place soon. "We will do it fast, much before the Commonwealth Games," she said.
