A young woman in Indore set an example of courage and bravery on Saturday when she chased down a man who snatched her gold chain and handed him over to the police.
Nirmala Pandit, in her early-twenties, takes private tuition classes in Haridwar. She was visiting relatives in Indore.
Around noon on Saturday, Ms Pandit was on her way to the market in Somani Nagar near the Aerodrome area, when a man snatched a chain off her neck and tried to flee. Nirmala, instead of panicking, ran behind the chain snatcher and caught him after chasing him for about a kilometre.
"I had just stepped out of the house's lane and was going to buy something. He came from behind, and ran away with my chain. I chased him for quite some distance, but nobody came to help. Then, a man threw a stone at the chain snatcher, and he threw the chain away and stopped," said Ms Pandit.
Ms Pandit says the chain was worth nearly Rs 40,000.
"When the accused tried to run away with her chain, she showed displayed a lot of bravery and caught him. We are filing a case of robbery. She has displayed a lot of courage," said police officer Kanaiyah Lal Dangi.
On Sunday, the police honoured Nirmala with a cash reward of Rs 10,000.
