Bikaner: Doctors at a government hospital in Bikaner, Rajasthan, say a five-month-old baby will need extensive plastic surgery to lead a normal life after her father bit off her nose, lips and cheeks in a fit of rage.

The man, who has been arrested, allegedly came home drunk on the night of January 26 and fought with his wife. When his frightened children began to cry, he beat up his older daughter, who is three, and then allegedly attacked the younger child, biting her face.

She was rushed to Bikaner's district hospital where doctors said they do not have the expertise to operate on the girl and sent her to Jaipur's SMS hospital. However, the hospital in Jaipur reportedly sent the girl back to Bikaner, saying since it's the weekend it cannot organise her operation.

The state children rights commission has now stepped in, offering the family financial assistance and has also said she could be taken to a Jaipur hospital for plastic surgery or even to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Delhi.

The father has been booked under the Prevention of Sexual Abuse of Children, a new law on protecting children from sexual assault, a non-bailable offence for treatment.
