In space-starved Mumbai, this corporator wants to work from a container

Mumbai: BJP corporator in Mumbai Dilip Patel has proposed an ingenious way of getting close to the people in the constituency without spending much money in the space-starved city. He has come up with the idea of setting up container-like offices in every corporator's constituency.

The proposal, which will be tabled in the Improvement Committee meeting this weekend, hasn't, however, found many takers, with the municipal commissioner already giving it a thumbs down.

Before this, the corporators' request to have seats reserved for them in BEST buses was rejected by the administration.

The Improvement Committee has also raised objections to the proposed commercial use of metro railway plots at Mandale and Turbhe villages in the M ward. It has decided to seek clarification from the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority (MMRDA) over the matter.

The proposal, sent by the urban development department of the state government, seeks to change the development plan of the M ward and the conversion of 24 hectares of land in Mandale and Turbhe for the Mass Rapid Transit System car depot-workshop and for commercial use.

However, BMC's Improvement Committee Chairman Manoj Kotak took strong objection to the clause of commercial exploitation of the plots.

"We are not sure how the MMRDA is planning to exploit the plots commercially when the proposed land is in the non-development zone. The state government has sent this proposal in haste, but we will study it in detail before approving it."
