Pune: Infantry Day 2010 was observed by the army's Southern Command headquarters in the city on Wednesday. Senior serving and retired officers and persons below officer rank (PBOR) paid homage to the gallant martyrs by laying wreaths at the National War Memorial at Morwada junction.

A social rendezvous had been planned at the Ranjitsinghji Sports Institute (RSI) for all serving and retired infantry officers and guests.

Barakhanas (food fests) had also been organised in each infantry unit of the army for soldiers.
October 27 is an important day in the history of independent India. The first contingent of infantry was airlifted to Srinagar airfield and resolutely defended the Valley from Pakistani invaders.

The infantrymen fought a courageous battle and regained Kashmir as a part of independent India. To commemorate this brave action of the infantry, the day is celebrated as Infantry Day every year.

The infantry has not only proved its mettle in the two World Wars but has also made outstanding contributions in the two wars and two military operations since independence, and scores of instances of aid to civil authorities.Lt Gen RK Swamy, chief of staff, Southern Command (left), greets retired officers after the wreath-laying ceremony at the National War Memorial, to commemorate Infantry Day, on Wednesday
