It was a contract killing, and they got the wrong girl

Nagpur: Two persons have been arrested in Nagpur for the murder of a college student who was stabbed on her way to class last month.

Police say that whoever killed Monica Kinrapure outside her engineering college was a contract killer- and got the wrong girl.

"It's a case of mistaken identity. They wanted to kill someone else and killed Monika instead," said Nagpur Police Commissioner Dr Ankush Dhanvijay.

A teacher by profession, Kunal Jaiswal had hired killers to murder his ex-lover.

Monica was walking from her hostel to her classes on March 11 when she was attacked with a knife. She was taken to hospital by a passerby - she was bleeding and a knife was wedged into her back.

The girl was a third-year engineering student and deceased Monika's classmate. She lived in the same hostel as Monika.

Murderers Shrikant Sonekar and his accomplice mistook Monika for her.

"They killed Monika, as she walked out of the hostel at the same time, looked same height, wore the same uniform and had her face covered with a dupatta," said Dr Ankush Dhanvijay.

The police had no details about the killers, though the murder had occurred in broad daylight on a fairly crowded street.

Angry students protested on the streets, and many appeals went out in search of leads.

Finally, a breakthrough came when the police probed call data records of her classmates and hostel inmates.

But the arrest is no consolation for the parents who lost a child so young, so meaninglessly.
